The 1664 Folio Club

The phrase 1664 folio most famously refers to the exceptionally rare Third Folio of Shakespeare’s plays, officially printed in London by Philip Chetwinde in 1664. It is highly prized by collectors because a large portion of the original stock was burned in the Great Fire of London (1666), making it rarer than the First Folio.This 1664 edition is historically significant for several reasons:The "Seven Play" Expansion: It was the first folio to introduce seven additional plays, including Pericles, Prince of Tyre.Historical Context: Published shortly after the English Restoration in 1660, it was the first Shakespearean book printed for the public after the closure and reopening of the theatres. Famous Institutional Decision: The 1664 Third Folio was considered so important that the Bodleian Library at Oxford University actually sold off and deaccessioned their original First Folio copy upon acquiring the 1664 edition.
