Mansfield Park follows Fanny Price, who at age ten is sent from her impoverished home in Portsmouth to live with her wealthy aunt and uncle, Sir Thomas and Lady Bertram, at their estate, Mansfield Park. Fanny grows up overshadowed by her elegant but self‑absorbed cousins—Tom, Maria, and Julia—and constantly belittled by her meddling aunt Mrs. Norris. Only her cousin Edmund Bertram shows her consistent kindness, becoming her closest companion.

As Fanny matures, the arrival of the charming but morally ambiguous Henry Crawford and his sophisticated sister Mary Crawford disrupts the household. Henry’s flirtations with both Maria (already engaged) and Julia create jealousy and tension, while Mary’s interest in Edmund challenges Fanny’s quiet, unspoken love for him.

The young people’s decision to stage the risqué play Lovers’ Vows further exposes vanity, impropriety, and conflicting values—an episode that highlights the novel’s deeper concerns with morality, social duty, and personal integrity. Sir Thomas’s unexpected return halts the theatricals, but the emotional fallout continue.
