Northanger Abbey was published posthumously in 1817, though Austen completed it in 1798–1799. It is both a satire of Gothic novels and a novel of manners, following Catherine Morland, a clergyman’s daughter who is “in training for a heroine.”
Catherine travels to Bath with the Allens, where she experiences her first taste of fashionable society. There she befriends the charming but self‑interested Isabella Thorpe and meets Henry Tilney, whose wit and kindness quickly attract her. Catherine’s imagination—fueled by Gothic novels like The Mysteries of Udolpho—often leads her to dramatic, incorrect assumptions about the people around her.
When Catherine is invited to visit the Tilney estate, Northanger Abbey, she expects dark secrets and Gothic intrigue. Instead, she learns that real life is far more ordinary—and more morally complex—than the novels she adores. Her mistaken suspicion that General Tilney murdered his wife becomes a turning point in her emotional growth
